Traveling & Kratom: Know The Rules Worldwide

When it comes to traveling with Kratom, you need to be extremely careful. There are many places where there are confusing laws and regulations regarding the substance, and if you don’t take the time to research the rules, you can wind up in a lot of trouble. Some people have had to end their vacations early, received large fines, or even wound up in jail because they did not check the laws before traveling. As the laws change from place-to-place, you can save yourself a ton of hassle if you do your due diligence.

Read Carefully Over Terms

As you may have read in various Kratom blog articles, there are many different names for the substance. Some people refer to Kratom as its scientific plant name mitragyna speciosa, while others call it a strain name. When it comes to laws and regulations, government agencies will sometimes refer to the substance by the active compounds mitragynine and hydroxymitragynine. If you don’t carefully read over the terms and brush up on Kratom’s various names, you may miss a pertinent detail and dive into some murky legal water. Keeping up to date with the naming conventions and laws will save you time.

Jurisdiction Dependent

As with any substance, the laws can change based on jurisdiction. A provincial/state-level law will only affect that area, especially if there is no federal law in place that poses restrictions. If you check up on a country you are visiting but fail to look into the specific city, you may bring Kratom to a place where it is illegal.

Not only this, but when you are traveling, you may be passing through a country where Kratom is banned, en route to somewhere it is not. If you happen to have a delayed stopover or you have to pass through security at this checkpoint, an inspection of your luggage could put you in jail at a place you never intended on staying.

Traveling with a substance in which the laws are unclear, you need to be very careful. You know the precise regulations in specific locations at your destination, and throughout the location, you will pass through on the journey.

Kratom Laws For Some Popular Travel Destinations

Outlined below are some popular travel destinations and the current laws regarding Kratom possession and use. While these provide a brief overview of the regulations, you should always be checking the months, weeks, and even days leading up to your departure to make sure that they have not changed.

Currently, within the USA, the restrictions on Kratom are confusing. The FDA has specified that Kratom has no therapeutic potential and can not be sold for personal consumption. However, despite this, you can still purchase Kratom in some U.S. areas if you are using it for research purposes. Some states have strict bans on Kratom. These include Wisconsin, Vermont, Rhode Island, Indiana, Arkansas, and Alabama. In other places, the Kratom laws are not so clear, like in Tennessee. As the laws change from city to city and state to state, you need to check up on the restriction when traveling domestically.

Similar to the USA, Canada’s laws regarding Kratom are not clear. There is no ban at a national level, but provincially, there are places that have states it can not be sold or bought for personal consumption. Depending on where you travel in Canada, you may be able to purchase for research only.

Unlike Canada and the USA, the laws regarding Kratom are apparent in Australia. They place Kratom on the same level as other dangerous narcotics like heroin. Here, you can not buy or possess Kratom without getting sent to prison. If you have travel plans to Australia in the near future, it is highly advisable to leave your Kratom at home.

Israel is one of the countries where it is essential to know your Kratom terms. They do not specifically ban Kratom, but they do have restrictions on the active compounds mitragynine and hydroxymitragynine. The penalties are strict for these compounds, so don’t bring your Kratom here.

Malaysia, Burma, Thailand

In Kratom’s home countries, the laws are stiffer than one would think. Here, Kratom is a controlled substance, and you could face drug-smuggling charges if you are found possessing or buying Kratom. However, if you are in Thailand, it is considered a lesser offense if you possess Kratom, but it is still illegal.

South Korea

South Korea has similar laws to Australia, where restrictions are high and penalties intense. As South Korea is also heavily policed, you will almost always be caught if you try to sneak in even just a small amount. Don’t bring Kratom to South Korea, bottom line.

As Europe is composed of many highly-traveled countries, all of which have varying rules and regulations, it can be tough to figure out if traveling here with Kratom is a good idea. It is controlled and illegal in most places, even though some countries like Denmark are trying to lift the rules. Depending on where you are traveling, you must look into the regulations first to not ruin your trip.

While it can take a bit of time sifting through the various paperwork and reading over the regulations in the countries you are traveling to, it will save you a big hassle. By using Kratom responsibly, you help to improve its worldwide reputation.
