An Overview Of Some Recent Kratom Studies

The substance, Kratom, has become a widely known product worldwide. Many advocates and supporters worldwide see it has potential benefits, but there are still various restrictions and regulations regarding its accessibility, making research more challenging. However, because there is such a demand for Kratom knowledge, more scientists worldwide, especially in the USA, are pushing regulators and governing bodies to allow more research. Some of the recent studies could be instrumental in the formation of Kratom’s much-needed credentials.

As Kratom is an ethnobotanical species that grows primarily in Southeast Asia, its medicinal properties have long been veiled from large western countries. For hundreds of years, the local communities in Southeast Asia have been looking to the mitragyna speciosa or Kratom plant for its benefits. It is only within the past few decades that more people have heard about its potential. Within the USA, Kratom has long been stood-against by the FDA, which does not accept Kratom as a potentially beneficial substance. They have even attempted to classify Kratom as a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substances Act. In some places within the USA, one can currently purchase or use Kratom for research rather than recreational use.

Why Research Is Fundamental

Research for products that have long been obscure is necessary so that a more significant population can learn of their benefits. Research is the jumping-off point for regulatory bodies as it provides insight into the risks and benefits of specific substances. The primary reason why Kratom was almost classified as a Schedule I controlled substance is because of a lack of research. Incorrect information often circulates regarding products such as this, leading governing bodies to impose harsh, almost unwarranted restrictions.

If Kratom were to have been classified in the CSA, any more research would be greatly hindered if not impossible because of a lack of available resources. Luckily, it did not become a controlled substance, and more studies have been conducted, some of which are outlined below.

Hemby’s Study

At the American institute, High Point University, a professor, Scott Hemby, measured Kratom’s benefits against its potential for addiction. This type of study is fundamental in establishing whether or not Kratom will be safe in the public’s hands. One of his study’s excellent characteristics was that not only did it look at the plant as a single organism, but it delved further into the active compounds within Kratom and their effects on the body. Two alkaloids, mitragynine, and 7-hydroxymitragynine were analyzed to determine the impact on the brain. It was found that the alkaloid mitragynine could potentially help curb problems, without invoking to Kratom.

Funding For Research

One of the primary hurdles all scientists and researchers must navigate is funding. All studies require a ton of resources, and often this comes in the form of capital investments. Kratom is a substance that has not been fully recognized by governing bodies so securing funding for its research is next to impossible. Luckily, Kratom advocates attracted NIDA’s eye, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who issued an immense grant of 3.5 million dollars to a team of scientists at the University of Florida. This grant was issued in 2018, and after one year, NIDA doubled its investment, which is said to be doled out over the next five years. The research’s primary aim will be to examine the alkaloids potential to curb the growing crisis within the USA.

Tackling The Opioid Crisis

The team at the University of Florida is not the only one looking into Kratom and its potential to minimize the side effects of opioid withdrawal. There was a study done by Zach Walsh and Marc Swogger, looking at people who were trying to utilize Kratom in their opioid cessation plan. The final results clearly showed that many opioid users who used Kratom in their cessation plan experienced less detrimental withdrawal symptoms, while simultaneously preventing them from relapsing.

The Full-View

Other research done on Kratom has shown that the LD50, or lethal dose, to be much higher than a standard consumer-dose. This information helps shed light on the low risks of Kratom use while also determining the best single dosage. These studies help curb any public concern regarding its safety and bring Kratom one step closer to widespread acceptance. By looking into only the possible benefits of Kratom but any risk, governing bodies can better understand the product, which could help alter their stance against Kratom.

If you want to be a part of Kratom advocates’ global community, it starts by connecting with a reputable and trustworthy dealer. By purchasing your product from a reputable company you can guarantee you support a company dedicated to Kratom research. The more you learn about Kratom, its source, and its research, the more likely Kratom’s reputation and credibility will improve.
