Understanding The Kratom Plant Family

Like all plants, the mitragyna speciosa or Kratom plant is part of a family. In this case, it is the Rubiaceae family. Some of the other well-known plants within this family are several Coffea plants of which coffee is derived.

The Rubiaceae Family

The Rubiaceae family has many different members ranging from trees to shrubs, with most of them being flowering species. Within the family, there are approximately 13,500 other species. Many of these plants are found within subtropic and tropic climate zones, with significant portions growing throughout Colombia, New Guinea, and Venezuela. Depending on the species in question, they may be more widely dispersed throughout the world, not including dry or cold regions.

A Rubiaceae family plant can be characterized by opposite leaves, endospermic seeds, and elliptical bladed leaves. Other than the mitragyna speciosa or Kratom plant, some of the other most notable family species are:

Cinchona

A flowering genus that grows primarily throughout South America. These species have a memorable role in various types of herbal medicine. Cinchona bark was also a critical part of homeopathy founding as it was used as a cure for Malaria.

Coffea

Many of these plants produce coffee beans, with the two most prominent being Coffea canephora and Coffee arabica. Coffee is one of the most consumed drinks on the planet, with the most prominent exporters being Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

Breonadia Salicina

These plants have been known to help with diarrhea as they have antibacterial qualities. Several African communities have praised it for its usefulness concerning gastrointestinal health. It has also helped treat E.Coli infections and other fungal infections.

Carapichea Ipecacuanha

Carapichea ipecacuanha is the plant that ipecac syrup is made from, used in medical facilities to cause vomiting. Many patients who receive ipecac as a form of treatment suffer from poisoning and need their stomach to be emptied out.

Throughout the Rubiaceae family, there are tons of plants with unique characteristics praised by societies around the world. From the world-love of coffee to the niche medicinal communities, these plants are deeply cherished by many people.

Kratom’s Place In The Family

Even though Kratom has a deep and cross-cultural history, there has not been much research on the plant. Scientists who have studied the plant have estimated that it has been around for nearly 50 million years; however, the first recording of it in human history was in 1839 by Pieter Korthals, a Dutch botanist. There is even some evidence that early observation of Kratom happened in Malaysian communities in 1836.

While many of the other Rubiaceae family members have been adequately represented throughout time, Kratom has not been so lucky. Many coffee plant records have been around since the 15th century, where more research resulted in the plant becoming one of the hottest commodities around the world for centuries. Now the coffee industry is worth nearly $20 billion. As Kratom has not had as much research conducted, it has widely remained obscure. That is until the past few decades when more widespread knowledge of Kratom has made its way into American society. With more people interested in the plant, regulatory bodies within the U.S. government have taken a harsh stance against it.

Combating Obscurity

With not enough research being conducted on Kratom, it remains somewhat of a mystery to many people. Even the studies that are being done are widely regulated by American government agencies, preventing information from being publicized regarding its effects and benefits. With constant battles with the FDA, Kratom has nearly been classified as a Schedule I controlled substance within the CSA. More research is needed to bring Kratom out of obscurity and into the spotlight of acceptance.

Many Kratom consumers wonder what they can do to help combat obscurity. If you are in this position, you should know that as a consumer, you have the power to make a change, and it all starts with exercising safe and responsible Kratom purchasing and use. When you purchase Kratom, whether it is online or at an in-person store, you must ensure that the company is practicing the right production methods from seeding to harvesting.

The best way to ensure that you are working with the most reliable is by looking into customer testimonials and reviews. They will usually be experts on Kratom and know lots of information about the plant and other Rubiaceae family members. Depending on where you live, your access to Kratom resources may be limited, which is why cutting corners can be easy, leading to you buy a contaminated or low-quality product.

The more careful you are purchasing and using Kratom, the better the reputation will be for Kratom throughout America. There are several advocacy groups and organizations that you can join if you want to be part of the Kratom movement.
