The FDA’s Effect On Kratom Prices

Kratom is a substance that has been coveted throughout Southeast Asia for centuries. Its history is extensive; however, only within the past decade or so has it become more widely known. With the growing popularity, the U.S. government and regulatory agencies are meeting its popularity with concern and skepticism.

One of the biggest adversaries to Kratom advocates is the Food and Drug Administration. They have discouraged the country from using Kratom, imposing regulations for importing, and giving out misleading and harsh warnings about its effects. The actions of the FDA have a quantifiable influence on Kratom’s prices and the interest of consumers.

Importing and Seizures

With more Americans seeking out Kratom as part of their natural health product regimen, the FDA is challenging the substance issuing multiple statements.

The FDA released import Alert 54-15 in 2016, which allowed any imports containing Kratom or the mitragyna speciosa plant to be detained. The release of this import alert came after more Kratom shipments were being noticed coming into the United States. The FDA said that there was not enough research outlining how safe Kratom was for more widespread use.

Before 2016, there were no regulations regarding Kratom, so this import alert sparked great turmoil within Kratom advocacy circles, which considerably affected Kratom’s prices and demand.

U.S. Uncertainty

The Food and Drug Administration or FDA has great power within the United States. They are also responsible for informing the public and often influence consumer behavior and purchasing choices. After the FDA released Import Alert 54-15, Americans were deterred from using Kratom as the FDA stated there were no therapeutic benefits. They also said that there were various health and safety concerns that consumers should be wary of. One of their classifications of Kratom at the time was an “unapproved drug.” Due to these statements and perspectives passed on by the FDA, Kratom demand and prices significantly decreased and ruined its credibility and reputation.

One of the former FDA commissioners, Scott Gottlieb, heavily condemned Kratom’s use, causing great uncertainty within American consumers. Due to this spread of hesitancy, vendors and distributors were forced out of business because fewer people thought of Kratom as a potentially therapeutic substance. While many have gone out of business, the ones left have to raise their prices to make up for the lack of available resources.

Currently, the state of Kratom within America is in flux. As some states and cities have made it legal to purchase Kratom, other places have harsh restrictions. There has been a push to move Kratom into the controlled substances system, classifying it as a Schedule I controlled substance; however, Kratom advocates are working hard to prevent this from happening.

Look For High-Grade Kratom

When you are buying Kratom you must make sure that it is high-grade. High-grade means you are supporting Kratom businesses and growers who have high-standards, boosting Kratom’s reputation. If you support non-reputable businesses, you may contribute to Kratom’s criminalization.

There are many products to choose from, allowing for a personalized Kratom experience. It is important that you find a distributor that is an ethical, fair-trade business that puts its growers and consumers on equal fields, making sure that standards are met throughout the production lifecycle. That way, you can rest assured that any Kratom you purchase will be lab-tested, pure, free of any contaminants or unwanted bacteria.

The more people make an effort to support reputable businesses; the more likely Kratom will be seen as a therapeutic substance, curbing its path towards the drug scheduling system. Not to mention you are guaranteed a safe and positive user experience if you carefully look into the Kratom dealer you are working with.
